Being a runner, at least once, you might have thought about what to wear when running?

Well, it’s a very common doubt in the head of almost every runner that what should he/she wear when running.

If you are also struggling to find the answer to this question, then in simple words, my answer will be – it completely depends on the weather and temperature of your region.

Running is best in temperatures ranging from 50 to 60 degrees. It will not be too cold or too hot. When the temperature is in the 40s, you’ll most likely need two layers, to begin with, and When the temperature is in the 50s, you will feel good with just one layer unless it’s windy.

Anyone would tell you that spring and fall are some of the best seasons for running.

Running is best in temperatures ranging from 50 to 60 degrees. It will not be too cold or too hot.

At the same time, there are temperature fluctuations.

What you will wear in 40-degree weather is unlikely to fit well in 60-degree weather, so having a variety of choices is important.

 

Cool: 40-50 °F

When the temperature is in the 40s, you’ll most likely need two layers, to begin with.

Determine what base layer fits best for you and what kind of outer layer you prefer.

If it’s really windy, I prefer a tank as a base layer and a zip-up jacket. I can cover my neck with it if necessary, or unzip it if I feel too warm.

You’ll also want running tights that cover your legs till your ankles so your body doesn’t have to work as hard to stay warm.

If you’re worried about feeling so hot, you can always go for tights that are a little shorter.

Depending on how cold it is, you should also consider a vest and running gloves.

Whatever is most beneficial to you. Whatever option you choose, it is important to ensure that your clothing is as adaptable as possible to cope with temperature variations.

 

Moderate: 50-60 °F

When the temperature is in the 50s, you will feel good with just one layer unless it’s windy.

You have the option of wearing a t-shirt with capris/tights or a wicking long-sleeve shirt with shorts. 

If the temperature is the lower 50s, or if you get cold easily, you should still wear a long-sleeved shirt and tights.

Alternatively, you might add a base layer during your run, which could be more comfortable.

Pleasant: 60-70 °F

This is my favorite time of year to go for a run! It is the ideal temperature for running as it is a bit warm but not too hot.

You can wear a breathable short-sleeved shirt and mesh-paneled capris or shorts with calf sleeves.

You will need to wear a little bit more or a little bit less depending on how cold or hot you tend to run.

Obviously, the intensity of wind and sun can influence the type of clothing you can wear to be comfortable.

 

Warm: 70-80 °F

When the temperature is in the 70s, you’ll feel great in a lightweight tank and running shorts or capris.

Capris can surprise you, but they will feel very comfortable if the fabric is mesh and breathable, and is built with vents to let in the breeze, which will help the sweat evaporate.

 

Hot: 80-90 °F

If you check the weather before your run and it’s hot and humid, when the temperature is in the 80s, the best choice is to wear a tank top that’s breathable, lightweight, and made of a synthetic fabric that wicks moisture.

Similarly, you’ll need to wear running shorts made of a moisture-wicking fabric like polyester. The last thing you want is for your clothes to stick to you and make you feel disgusting.

 

Very Hot: 90+ °F

If the weather is incredibly hot, you can typically run in the bare minimum of clothes.

For women, this could be a sports bra, while for men, it could be a shirtless style.

However, when you remove your clothes, make sure you are protecting yourself from the sunlight. And, since it is so hot, make sure you drink plenty of water during your run, as you can easily become dehydrated.

When it gets very cold, you’ll need to dress in as many layers as possible. You’ll also need something to cover your ears, such as a headband or a hat, and gloves, particularly as the temperature drops below freezing.

Cold: 30-40 °F

When the weather drops into the 30s, you’ll most likely need three layers: a tank top base layer, a long-sleeve shirt, and a zip-up winter running jacket.

But don’t replace your moisture-wicking socks with fleece or wool.

Your toes will be sorry later. Your feet may remain warmer, but they may also sweat and swell, resulting in blisters and general discomfort.

Hardcore Cold: 20 °F and Below

When it’s this cold outside, you should think about running on a treadmill.

I know it’s the bane of a runner’s life, but in this cold weather, it may be worth it. If you do plan to go for a run outdoors, try to keep your nose and mouth covered because the air can get really cold.

Similarly, you’ll also need to wear leg warmers or calf tights and a heavy jacket to keep your core warm. You’ll also need two pairs of gloves and a thicker hat with fleece inside.

Finally, you’ll need two pairs of tights and two long-sleeve shirts, or a thicker one if it’s very cold. You may also need to consider trail-running shoes for more traction when hitting snow and ice.

In essence, when running in bitterly cold weather, if you don’t have two of something, there’s a fair chance you won’t stay warm enough when running.
